Granola. You can hardly walk down the cereal aisle at a grocery store without being confronted with a dozen “artisanal” varieties of this simple breakfast cereal.
We have tried a great many store-bought varieties. Some we enjoy, but none did we really love. Almost all are too complex, overly dressed, overly sweetened. All are incredibly over-priced. None gave us just the basic starting point which we could add to in the moment. Sometimes you have fresh fruit to add, other times dried fruit. Do you want something to eat dry or as the base of a trail mix? Or something to pour kefir over or sprinkle over thick Greek-style or Icelandic skyr yogurt? Perhaps you just want plain granola that tastes great in milk.
Here’s a simple granola recipe that is incredibly easy to make and works as a great starter for any possible use. It is also quite affordable.

- 1 c honey
- 1 c. vegetable oil
- 5 c. old-fashioned oats
- 1 c. almonds (cut or coarsely chopped)
- 1 c. unrefined sesame seeds
- 1 c. sunflower seeds
- 1 c. shredded coconut
- 1c. almond or soy flour
- 1 c. non-instant powdered milk
- 1 c. wheat germ
- 1 c. flax or chia seed (optional)
- In smaller mixing bowl, combine the honey and vegetable oil. pour the honey into the oil while stirring for the best result. Try to mix the honey and oil as uniformly as possibly before adding to the dry ingredients.
- In a large bowl, add the dry ingredients and stir to mix before adding the honey and oil mixture. Combine the two mixtures in the large bowl while stirring to cover the dry ingredients uniformly.
- Spread the mixture on 2 cookie sheets (we place parchment paper under for better results) and bake at 275 degrees for 55 minutes or until slightly browned.
I will be making this. Looks excellent.
Love it!
